A year-long course, taught in person, in which a young man builds his own answer and is never handed one. His father, or a male mentor over eighteen, is in the room for the first meeting and behind him for the rest. It is secular: it can be taught in a Buddhist government school, a Christian home, or an international school with no chaplain, without changing a word. And it measures itself, and will publish the result even if the result is nothing.
It is written on the wall of the room. It is the founding rule of the method the course is built on — Viktor Frankl's logotherapy — and it is the answer to the most serious criticism ever made of that method, which is that in practice the founder sometimes broke it. A course that teaches non-imposition as a hard constraint, with a father watching for it, is answering that criticism. A course that does not is confirming it.
"Logotherapy is neither teaching nor preaching. It is as far removed from logical reasoning as it is from moral exhortation… The logotherapist's role consists in widening and broadening the visual field of the patient so that the whole spectrum of meaning and values becomes conscious and visible to him."Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning (1963), Part II
Every session is a question with the traditions arguing in the room and a piece of written, private work. Nothing is collected. Nothing is graded. The point is not to produce a boy who can discuss meaning; it is to produce one who has committed to something and acted on it.
| # | Session | The work |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | The north star | An hour, once, in his own words: three people he admires and exactly why; what he wants true of himself at thirty; what his shame tells him he values; what he'd do even knowing he'd fail; who is counting on him; one sentence. The tool that runs it. |
| 1 | The voice you didn't choose | One time you knew you shouldn't, and did. What told you? |
| 2 | Bad shot, not bad man | Rewrite one thing you're ashamed of as an aiming error. Say where you were aiming. |
| 3 | Whose dream are you in | The irritation diary, one week: every annoyance, and the aim it implies. Then — did you pick these aims? |
| 4 | Where you are the tyrant | Nine rungs — self, family, parents, teacher, friends, work, team, community, state. Where are you using force when an invitation would do? Written, private. |
| 5 | Adult before leader | What can you already do that nobody has to do for you? An honest list. |
| 6 | The thing that keeps calling | What has interested you since you were small, that you've told nobody? |
| 7 | What you'd have to stop being | Not do. Be. |
| 8 | Not by force | The thing you can't make yourself do. Everyone told you the answer was discipline; three traditions tested that and reported it doesn't work. Design the invitation instead. |
| 9 | What you owe the house | Which man is your father? Which will you be? |
| 10 | The hand that gives | Give something that costs you to someone who can't repay it. Tell no one. |
| 11 | Why me | Two men, one unfair blow: one demands an answer, one refuses treatment until he knows who shot the arrow. Who is the adult? |
| — | The silence | A period without phone, reading, or explaining yourself. Not a module. The desert between eleven and twelve. |
| 12 | The elephant and the rope | At the camp, in Surin, with the mahouts. No handout. A creature that could walk through a wall, held by a rope it has decided it cannot break. Which are you? |
The version of these sessions with the two religious traditions arguing openly — the one written first for the author's own sons — is on Baptized Buddhist. This one is the secular spine, and it is the one a school runs.
The largest analysis of the meaning literature — 147 studies, 92,000 people — found that having meaning goes with being well, and searching for it goes, slightly, with being worse off. A course that makes boys search without helping them find may leave them worse than it found them. So every session ends in a commitment or an action, not in more introspection; and the year is built around things done — a silence kept, a gift given, a post tested — rather than a year of talking about what one's purpose might be.
And the course measures itself: a twelve-item purpose scale before and after, both halves of a second instrument to watch that "searching" does not rise without "having," and the result published whether or not it moves. How it is built →
An international school in Bangkok has agreed to run the first cohort inside its existing structure for short-term teaching projects. No cohort has finished. There are no graduates and no results yet, and this page will carry them when there are — including if they are null. The teacher's guide, the sequence and the assessments are being written so that other teachers can run the course without the author in the room; that artifact is the point of the whole thing.
